Well, I don't have a 7.1 box here, but on my 7.2 box /tmp/orbit-<whatever>
is mode 700...

are you sure you didn't run up2date?  that's the one thing that's always
guaranteed to break graphics on my machine.  that reminds me... 'uninstall
up2date so i won't accidentally use it ever again.'

i'm on a 7.1 machine and /tmp/orbit-root/. is 700 as well.  no idea
what it's for.

my advice:  stop using Gnome ;^)
