The definition of Rawhide is that it's bleeding edge - there will be times when a rawhide package can render your system unbootable, corrupt data, or do other nasty things. Many times, the rawhide package is perfectly safe. This will vary from package to package and release to release. Even if somebody says today's rawhide version is safe doesn't mean that tomorrow's version is. There are always going to be interactions between the different packages within rawhide as well. You may find out you need a different library to meet a dependency, and that library could be nasty. You pays your money and you takes your chances. I've run rawhide releases before and I've run cooker releases (Mandrake's bleeding edge releases). I've had systems that wouldn't boot and learned a lot about system recovery. I also had the opportuntiy to test and use new releases and provide feedback to the developers. You should *always* be careful with using rawhide packages. Look at what the specific package actually does and consider what could go wrong - with e2fsprogs, you could potentially have a bad e2fsck that will corrupt your data the next time you boot. If this potential risk is not worth it to you, stay with tested proven production releases.
