1: Are those IP addresses (for the nameservers) correct? 2: Does /etc/nsswitch.conf list this line: hosts: files dns which says to use /etc/hosts first and then DNS. 3: www.microsoft.com seems to be firewalled: you can't actually ping it. Does ping recite an IP address to you or say "unknown host"? If the former, then DNS is working. If the latter, the DNS is still not right.
