I think there's room for debate there, and I'd certainly like to see
statistics too.  It is true that solid state components are happier in a
stable environment at a constant temperature, but when you're dealing
with moving parts, there are tradeoffs between the wear caused by
temperature fluctuations and startup surges vs. the erosion of surfaces
caused by friction in constant operation.

I'd be interested in bench testing of MBTFs under various conditions for 
common components.
