True.  But many of us cut our teeth on Linux in the days when this was a 
_necessary_ step to get much of anything working.  Old habits die hard.  
;-)

I agree that Red Hat's stock kernels are very flexible lately, and 
you're quite right that the need to do this is becoming rather rare.
