I used to do this years ago when I ran AT&T System V and dumb terminals 
even used rh 6.0 as one of the dumb terminals. I don't have many of my
notes left but I show that I used E71 not 8n1 you might try that. Also
you might have to play with terminal type.  I just had a respawn getty
line for the serial port in the inittab on the server and used kermit
or minicom on the dumb terminal. If this doesn't help I'll try digging
to see if I still have any more notes left on how I hot it to work.
