        -are u able to open any terminal ( ex: xterm).
if "yes" then run 
        $ switchdesk <to whatever desktop u have>  (no problem if u doesn't know the 
desktops installed
pls run switchdesk without any arguments and u will know the desktops available)
if  "no" then u should either login to runlevel 1 or 3 
and execute the above command. (note that switchdesk works in both GUI/non-GUI 
environment)
