I didn't see a reply to this....so here goes.

IMAP is the Internet Message Access Protocol.  Basically, it's a replacement
for POP, if you're familiar with that.  It's a way to retrieve mail from a
server.

So, if you have IMAP configured in inetd or xinetd, an instance will run for
each access.

Like any service,  if you don't need it, you're best of with it uninstalled.
