login, do a 'ps -aux' Look for anything funny, like the word 'defunct' or 99.9% CPU usage on a process called 'kdesomething' Try killing the process kill PID or kill -9 PID Do you have AGP? Some board/gpu combos lock up displaying some 3D graphics. Use your brain, try unplugging the monitor, plug it back in.
