I managed to set one up on my laptop a while ago, just before I got broadband.
I think it was just a case of recompiling the kernel with a new module from the linmodems website, watch out for serial stuff in the kernel configuration before you recompile (/dev/tty stuff) 'lsmod' 'insmod' 'modprobe' are three commands I went over doing that.
