what about 'ps aux | grep R'?  How many processes have a STATE of R?

A long time ago (before 2.4) I had a couple of SMP boxes that started
reporting a high load because of processes using UNIX domain sockets. 
The GNOME loadavg applet would keep the load at 1 all by itself. 
However, I was never able to show any detriment /other/ than a high
reported load avg.

I don't know what might cause that on 2.4.7-10, but there were errata
kernels for 7.2, and you should probably test and apply them:
