Hi Andy, It would be useful if you write down and tell us what the kernel tells you. What you are doing seems right (not sure about grub thought, still use lilo here, so you'll have to check that out yourself, although I wouldn't be to sure about the "root(hd0,0)" part) but it is useful to know where and how things go wrong to be able to help you.
