That is exactly how I did it. Or rather I used those commands. What I did was run 'make dep clean bzImage && make modules modules_install'. That has always worked for me. But in this case I never get to the modules stage. ?? I also tried many different kernels, copies etc., No luck. There must be a way to get around this.
