IMHO, setting the alias should go in your ~/.bashrc, while setting
the command line prompt should go in ~/.bash_profile.  i just tested
putting an alias in .bashrc, opened up another xterm while in GNOME,
and it worked fine.

what release of red hat are you dealing with?
