Ok. I have never had to dig into this but maybe I can leasrn something too. for background sake the login process is accomplished differently for each of the scenarios you describe. ssh does its own since it can be setup to try several methods of authentication. the passowrd stored in /etc/shadow is just one of them. in runlevel 5 I believe the login process is performed by gdm or something like that. Soooo. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that for some reason mingetty is not connecting to its login program. I think it uses a program named, of all things, login. Since I am really in the dark I am going to read a bit but first ask a couple of more questions and hope someone else jumps in if we get enough information out into the open :) first did it ever work? If so what were the events immediately prior to it stopping? are there any messages in the logs? I would look in /var/log/messages and for grins, /var/log/secure. I don't know if this is relevent or not but can you boot into single user mode? what about if you are logged in in runlevel 5 via the gui, what happens when you do ctl-alt-F1? do you get a prompt? does it work? Oh yeah, when you see the prompt and try to login do you see the user name typed in? This all I can think of right now until we get some more info and get an idea of the direction to go.
