This may be contributing to your problem, in the sense that a separate 
/var or /tmp might keep the system more stable while you're trying to 
narrow down what's flooding your disk and where it's being written to.

Since the box returns to normal after a reboot, it's most likely a 
temporary file handle that is not being released properly. Any program 
doing extensive caching or logging is a prime suspect for futher 
evaluation.
