you've never heard of "rename" because it never existed until recently.
it's first incarnation, near as i can tell, was as a really handy utility
in o'reilly's "unix power tools" book, and it was a shell script.

sometime after that is when it seems to have appeared as a regular 
command.  i could be wrong, feel free to correct me.
