Man is great. Obviously you didn't see the "z" option, i.e., gzip/gunzip. tar cvzf tarball.tgz filename... dirname... ... Simplist thing is the Unix world :-) But you are right, it will take a few years to get used to man and how it is laid out and how to read them. They are reference guides, not tutorials.
