I think you're thinking of mtab.

Actually, "mount /mnt/floppy" would work fine if there was an entry in
fstab. According to the mount man page:

  "(ii) When mounting a file system mentioned in fstab, it
   suffices to give only the device, or only the mount point."

His problem was that fstab specified an ext2 filesystem, instead of the
"auto" more commonly used for floppy drives in desktop Linux systems.
