You can also use:

        env TERM=vt100 telnet

to launch telnet with a different setting for TERM than your shell. That 
said, the guy who asked the question may also need to use:

        tset vt100

to actually set the local terminal to vt100, rather than just the
environment variable. It just depends on what he's trying to do.
