Brett - Thanks for your detailed response.

Blush, the problem was actually a FVWM2 Window Manager problem. I was using
a kiosk setup  where the WM would start full screen and not allow me any
results from <crtl><alt><bkspc> or allow me access to a new terminal. Not an
OS problem at all.

Thanks to the others that responded.
