The magic you speak of is Boot Magic (PQ Boot) and Partition Magic. Just
hide the current bootable partition, install the new OS, and install Boot
Magic (PQ Boot) to select what OS to boot to at startup. You do not need to
a boot disk or to re-install the boot loader.

It works.  You just need to have a boot disk (or other magic) to boot
Linux again after Windows re-writes the boot record.  Once back in
Linux, you have to set up and re-install your boot loader.
