Take a look at plugger plug-in:
http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger.html

Using plugger, you can choose how your browser handles x-mplayer media types
via the plug-in (ie. plugger) by specifying it in the pluggerrc file.

For the application that will play the media types itself, there are several
options:
- mplayer
- mpg123
- plaympeg
- avipla
etc.

Hope that helps.
