Actually, in my experience, it is the value of HighTotal in
/proc/meminfo - we have several examples:

(All boxes have 4GB of memory)

IBM x330 running RH7.2 2.4.9-31enterprise  2948012 kB

IBM x330 running RH7.2 2.4.9-31smp0xe      3473328 kB
(custom kernel from Magma)

IBM x335 running RH7.2 2.4.9-31custom      3276780 kB
(custom kernel, had to add Broadcom and LSI MPT SCSI drivers)
