>I'm not sure I follow, but are you using the ALSA drivers?

No, I believe it's the OSS driver.
The line I have in my modules.conf is:
Alias sound-slot-0 es1371

This checks out as the appropriate driver for the card.

>They default to muted settings.
>Volume settings should be saved on shutdown,

That was my understanding as well. It appears as though all inputs are
being muted whenever I start an X session and not otherwise being saved
between sessions.

>unless you removed the relevant lines from /etc/modules.conf:
>post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L
>       >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
>pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S
>       >/dev/null 2>&1 || :

Those lines are intact. This is from a fresh installation (and my third
try at fixing it) and I haven't touched modules.conf.

>Open your mixer, and mark the line in port for recording.
>By default, the mic port is used for the recording source.

I had the line input selected for recording right from the start... No
go.
