I wrote to a newsgroup to see if I could get any other thoughts on my problem. So far I have got only one reply. It suggests that the answer to my problem is simply that ... well it's easy to paste the reply: It's simple. You don't have enough memory. KDE requires a lot of memory, more than you have, and the download time difference arises from disk paging activity, not network speed. I have a PIII 1000Mhz processor and 256MB of memory.
