As someone else said, it sounds like your serial port is in polled mode
rather than interrupt driven mode.  You probably have an IRQ conflict.
Find all the IRQs used by all your hardware and see what conflicts.
Also check /proc/interrupts and see what Linux thinks is using the irq
you think you should be using for your serial port, probably 3, 4, or 5.
Also, "man setserial" has information that you may find useful.
