I'm running RedHat 5.0 and I've got a 28.8K internal modem and an external
ISDN modem. I've successfully followed the Linux PPP HOWTO through section 14,
"Setting up the connections manually." This involves using communications
software to make the connection (I've been using Seyon) and then firing up
pppd. Using this technique I've been connecting for months to both my ISP and
to my office, where I've got to use a SecureID, using both the internal
standard modem and the external ISDN modem.

But I've never been able to get the next step working, "Automating your
connections." This involves using chat to control the modem. After whittling
the chat script to the bare minimum I can only deduce that chat cannot see
the modem, regardless which modem /dev/modem is pointing to.

Specifically, the command
    /usr/sbin/chat -v '' AT OK
does not cause the DTE, RD, and TD lights to flicker as does sending 'AT' via
Seyon. The messages in /var/log/messages are, initially,
    May 30 21:26:10 localhost chat[2969]: send (AT^M)
    May 30 21:26:10 localhost chat[2969]: expect (OK)
and sometime later,
    May 30 21:26:55 localhost chat[2969]: alarm
    May 30 21:26:55 localhost chat[2969]: Failed

Can anyone offer any hints?
