1. "locate" searches a database updated by the "updatedb" command.  You
may not have updated the locate database.  

2.  Another easily overlooked database, the "whatis" database is created
by  /usr/sbin/makewhatis. This database is searched by the "apropos"
command, which can be very helpful when you don't know exactly what you
are looking for, but you do know some key words. For example, "apropos
time <return>" calls forth a slew of commands dealing with setting and
reading system time.
