Bill James make a strong argument for a strong hitting second baseman as an
MVP.  Winning teams have superior offense up the middle since they didn't
need to make the classic Annie Savoy tradeoff:

Besides, I'd never sleep with a player hitting under .250 unless he
had a lot of R.B.I.'s or was a great glove man up the middle.
