Is anyone else getting all warm and tingly talking about baseball again?

Subject: I know we're rational, but

I briefly made the mistake of going to the boston.com Sox comments page,
where panic has gripped the Hub over the Teixeira signing.

Now we, being smarter than average, are above this stuff because we know
that even with this signing the Yankees 2009 lineup could well be less
productive than 2008.

Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu were very good hitters for New York in
2008. Their replacements, Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher, combined are
just about their equals.

Let's go to the 2008 numbers:

Giambi: 145 games, 32 hr, 96 rbi, .247 ba, .373 obp, .502 slg, .875 ops,
128 ops+

Abreu: 156 games, 20 hr, 100 rbi, .296 ba. .371 obp, .471 slg, .842 ops,
120 ops+

Teixeira: 157 games, 33 hr, 121 rbi, .308 ba. .410 obp, .552 slg, .962
ops, 151 ops+

Swisher: 153 games, 24 hr, 68 rbi, .219 ba, .332 obp, .410 slg, .742
ops, 93 ops+

So all the Yanks have done is keep themselves at their 2008 level. And
the Sabathia acquisition cancels out the loss of Mussina. So the sum
total of the improvements in the Bronx is named A.J. Burnett -- the guy
who has "oft-injured" in front of his name.

A lot of ball to be played before October 2009.
