Ironic. Ellsbury just won MLB.com's Defensive Player of the Year.

Nick Carfardo thinks we should trade Westmoreland.

So I agree with Steve.

Actually, that has him as a minus-9, which is quite a bit below
average. Other fielding metrics had him even worse, though the two prior
seasons that he was a little above average. Seems hard to believe, but the
explanation I've heard is that he is terrible at balls hit right at him; very
slow to react coming in or going back. He also apparently started playing
abnormally deep, allowing a lot of balls to fall in.

He's got the tools to be outstanding, but don't know if you can teach
instincts.

I'm OK with trading Casey Kelly, but I don't want to deal Ryan
Westmoreland. Ever.

Ellsbury was slightly below average in fielding in 2009:

He was so close to average that I wouldn't say he cost us
anything

I was surprised yesterday when Sean McAdam and Steve
Buckley knocked Ellsbury's defense. He's made some exciting plays, but perhaps
he's not strong day-to-day?

Bucholz/Ellsbury does sound like a lot, but I'm about
the team. If Theo can fill the hole in LF I'm all for the deal.

BTW, you're all free to throw these words back at me in
a couple of years. But Casey Kelly better be a damn good ballplayer if he's
that untouchable.

If dealing those two gets a power-hitting first
baseman just coming into his prime, I can live with it. Ellsbury's OBP is in
the lower third of major-league leadoff hitters and he doesn't provide a ton of
power. I like the kid and I like what he brings, but I think the upgrade to
Gonzalez is worth it, especially given that Mike Cameron can play center field.

Any chance they make the deal for Gonzalez,
who's on a very club-friendly deal at the moment, and still sign Bay to play
left? That team would stack up very favorably against the Yankees. It's also
feasible payroll-wise because a lot of money is coming off the books the next
two years.

Talk is that the Red Sox would have to deal
both Clay Bucholz AND Jacoby Ellsbury to land Adrian Gonzalez. Ellsbury's
speed makes him so valuable, I'm not sure I like where a trade like that would
leave the team.
