Last I knew, Chaz Scoggins of the Lowell Sun did most of the official scoring.

Here's the rule:

A base hit is a statistic credited to a batter when such batter reaches base
safely, as set forth in
this Rule 10.05. ...
(4) the batter reaches first base safely on a fair ball that has not been
touched by a fielder and
that is in fair territory when the ball reaches the outfield, unless in the
scorer's judgment
the ball could have been handled with ordinary effort;

Looks as though scorers have the leeway to assess errors but I've never seen it
happen -- at Fenway or anyplace else.

Can someone please explain to me why if an outfielder overruns a ball by 20
feet the play is scored a base hit? And don't give me the "it's not an error
because he didn't touch it" excuse, because I know that's not true ...

Fenway scorekeepers have been awful for as long as I can remember. Anyone know
who does it now?
