Withiut surprises, the sport would die. It's a boring game. We watch because there are always surprises

Or, do the Red Sox have a wider standard deviation of performance? If there had been a LITTLE bit of decent pitching last night, the Sox would have won. (Ok, Wake was decent and did his job. So did Bard). But Dice-K continues to put the offense behind the 8-ball - 3 out of 4 times this year (well, I guess that's pretty consistent!). Big Papi - you never know what you'll get, an 0-fer or a multi-homer game. The offense can be really good (5 homers last night - are you kidding me?) or really bad (9 total runs against the Tigers in 3 games). Papelbon is up and down, and even when he gets the save, it's usually 'interesting'. I guess this is going to be our theme for the year.
