Ray - My thoughts on you framing 2 camps...
I think for the Red Sox (and several other teams with higher budgets) we actually have 3 types of fans: 1) Fans of the game & Red Sox team/players - attend no matter the record or season's implications, enjoy the game for what it is, and watch specific players. 2) Campaign/Cheerleaders - attend during pivotal moments where key events are or could be taking place based upon the outcome of the game. 3) Fans of the Red Sox as an organization - attend because they BELIEVE in the organization and it's directions. These fans attend as it's the Red Sox (you don't have many of these if any in Pittsburgh for example). We have kept the attendance high for the last 7-8 years due to 1) & 3) driving the events for 2) (and Red Sox Nation spanning both NA and the Globe). Due to the lack of key players in our lineup this year, some fans in 1) have lost some interest as their players are not playing AND lots of fans from 2) whom are seeing Tampa and Yankees taking the spot light while the Sox have not been highlighted for the most part beyond the laundry list of DL participants. So IMHO - the NESN ratings have taken a hit due to the above (NESN ratings follow the attendance ratings) and perhaps just my own viewpoint but when I watch NESN aren't there more commercials outlining ticket sales this year more then I've seen in quite some time? This would seem to indicate that our overall viewership is starting to shrink due to the above as well which is finally pinching the FO/ticket sales. Now... back to the 4-0 game on FOX... And no unfortunately we aren't in the lead. -Larry On Fri, Jul 30, 2010 at 11:37 AM, Ray Salemi <[email protected]> wrote: > I think that it would be interesting to understand what sports mean to > different communities.
