>From si.com - A recent poll of baseball execs suggests the Carl Crawford sweepstakes will eventually come down to the Red Sox and the Angels. [The] last time the Red Sox failed to make the postseason, after 2006, they spent a lot of money. You can argue whether it was spent wisely, but they gave $70 million to J.D. Drew, $36 million to Julio Lugo, and spent approximately $104 million in bidding-rights fees and a contract to land Daisuke Matszuaka. The Red Sox understood they needed to improve, and needed to get the fans back on their side after a disappointing season. That's true this year, too. Expect also that the Red Sox will take a look at free agent Jayson Werth, who's more of a run-producing outfielder. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not a huge Carl Crawford fan. I think I would rather see them go after Werth, although in my mind, both guys hinge on what the Sox do with Ellsbury (I think they should keep him). Too bad Drew's contract didn't expire after this year. I'm not a Drew hater but we need a lot more production out of the outfield next year.
