My initial wise ass retort was going to be, what's the problem? Attendence and viewership are up....but apparently they're not. They're both on the decline.
So here's why I'm not watching much ball. 1. Season is too long. Remember how apopletic we were in April with the Sox start? Now they're sporting the best record in ball (or near to it, I don't want to check.) I'm finding the small storylines boring because I know, at the end of the day, they don't mean diddly. I acknowledge this is also one of baseballs virtues, the marathon instead of the sprint. But it just doesn't lend itself to compelling story lines. 2. Games are too long. I'm sometimes reluctant to watch a game because I know it won't see the conclusion. 3. I'm glad the system is rigged in our favor, but it's rigged nonetheless. Until we deal with salary disparity this problem won't be fixed. 4. We need some innovation on the TV side. I'd rather watch a bunch of high schoolers play ball in person than watch a regular season ball game. TV is FAR better in person. 5. Adopt a roto-style method of team building. The Red Sox can keep 11 players on the roster in the offseason and make everyone else a free agent. (I'm being silly but how awesome would that be to watch.) Anyway, the game has problems. I'm not sure the playoff system is really the biggest one.
