The Yankees offered to bathe Cliff Lee in money and he took less because he wanted to go to Philly. He's not going to be worth the price the last few years of that contract. Of course Crawford isn't exactly giving equal value ...
As Tom said, it was reasonable to expect Lester and Buchholz to hold steady with Beckett and Lackey improving. It's hard to plan for Buchholz and Dice-K missing most of the year with injuries and Lackey turning completely into ... well, I can't think of anyone who's been this consistently bad. Wakefield was the No. 6 starter and has continued to slide, and Doubront was No. 7, but has been hurt a good chunk of the year. Aceves was No. 8, but somewhere in there he became too valuable as a mop-up man to do the job.
