This is what happens when you keep an old man around for "leadership." Leadership in sports comes largely from personal example, and Varitek was embarrassing. I don't know if there is a lynch pin here, but Varitek was an example of the kind of hubris the Sox maintained, "We can keep an old man as catcher because we're so good we can afford to cut corners." Yes you can, but don't be surprised when that kind of thinking spreads.
