Sure, he considered Papi would go elsewhere, but I think Papi going on ESPN and
making statements that he is disenchanted with Boston bolsters his position.
If he wasn't in a contract year he would not be doing it. He is negotiating.

Everybody will forget about the fact that Papi said something nice about the
Yankees organization as soon as he signs again with the Red Sox and proclaims
his love for the fans as his reason for coming back.

See ya Lackey.

Steve,I get the basic concept of negotiations. But if you think Lucchino hadn't
already considered the possibility of Papi going elsewhere, including NY, then I
think you're selling him short. This is amateur hour stuff.

As for the comments, they come with a cost of good will, too high a cost in my
opinion. Papi already has helped mute any outrage over his departure.

See ya Papi.

It's not about "effecting" Larry Lucchino. It's about staking out a favorable
position in the negotiation.

Papi wants Larry to think that him going to NY is a real option. If Larry
believes that Papi would consider this, it helps Papi's position in the
negotiation.

Whether or not Larry buys it is another thing altogether.

What? You think Larry Lucchino is affected by this one iota? I don't.

The public? They don't matter in contract negotiations. He's trying to make
Sox management and the management of potential suitors think he is willing to
leave. That puts him in a better bargaining position.

Yanks have jeter and arod to fill half the DH slots. If they sign
papi it's at a discount.

Did his agent really think this would get the public behind him? Great
suggestion.

Here is another. Get a new agent.
