I think it was more that our starting pitching killed us in September. Beckett
actually had a decent year, with an ERA of under 3.00 for
the year. Not necessarily 'ace' stuff but not a total disaster (September
aside). Lester won 15 games - again, not ace-like but not a
total disaster. I think the failings of Lackey and Dice-K, and the injury to
Buchholtz overshadowed the years they had (again, September
aside). But the bullpen was also outstanding during the summer run last year,
and that is certainly a big impact so far this year,
along with a dormant offense the first two games. Melancon looks terrible so
far, and if we're depending on Padilla to be the Aceves
of 2012, that concerns me. And yesterday especially, it seem like we missed
Aceves in his 2011 role in a big way, although he was
terrible when he was in there. I think he is the sort of guy who needs to pitch
multiple innings almost every day or every other day to
stay sharp.

I just hope Bobby V has the patience to not start turning everything upside
down after 3 games, although he is already tinkering with the
lineup.

I fail to understand how it is that we all agreed that our starting pitching
killed us last year, yet we were happy to go into the season with the same
starting pitchers.

The irony - for me at least - is I actually thought our bullpen would be our
