I dunno, isn't this kind of like the HOF debate - I know one when I see
one....?  ;-)

Bill James devised the game score so that one could look at a pitching line and
calculate a single number that tells you whether the pitcher pitched well.  A
game score over 50 is "pitched well enough to win" or "This wasn't the
pitcher's fault."

The highest game score for a nine-inning game in the history of baseball was
Kerry Wood's one-hit, no walk, 20-strikeout shutout performance for the Chicago
Cubs against the Houston Astros on May 6, 1998. His game score was 105.

I've gotten to the point where I calculate it almost automatically.

There's a description here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_score

Tampa Bay
IP
H
R
ER
BB
SO
HR
ERA
Shields(W, 2-0) 8.1 4 0 0 2 5

But, I combine some of the steps to make it faster:

1.  Give the pitcher a base score for complete innings pitched.  There is a
pattern here.  The even innings end in 2 and the odd innings end in 7.

4 : 62
5 : 67
6 : 72
7 : 77
8 : 82
9 : 87

2.  Give the pitcher a point for every out beyond a complete inning.

Shields pitched 8.1, so he gets a base of 82 + 1 = 83.

3.  Give the pitcher a point for every strikeout and take away a point for a
walk.

Shields had 5 K's and 2 BB's so add 3.  83 + 3 = 86.

4.  Subtract 2 points for every hit

Shields gave up 4 hits. 4 * 2 = 8  86 - 8  = 78.

5.  Add runs and earned runs, multiply by 4 and subtract.  78 - 0 = 78.

Very good score

Bard's numbers:

Boston
IP
H
R
ER
BB
SO
HR
ERA
Bard(L, 0-2) 6.2 4 1 1 7 7

6 innings = 72
2 outs > 72 + 2 = 74
7 K - 7 BB = 0 > 74 + 0 = 74
4 H  4 * 2 = 8 > 74 - 8 = 66
1R + 1 ER = 2 * 4 = 8  > 66 - 8 = 58 Game Score.

So 58 says that Bard pitched well enough to win most games, but he didn't pitch
great.

If you just looked at the 1 run, you'd say this was a close pitcher's duel, but
Bard was clearly beaten by Shields who pitched longer and better.
