Agreed, Ray. His words came off as "they made me do it." "They" being the fans, media, front office, what have you. Even when that pressure wasn't there, pre- 2009, he still had bad free-agent signings -- Renteria, Lugo, Drew.

There was an article in the Herald in which Theo was supposed to lay out where he thinks the Sox went wrong. The article is 98% fluff, but there was one nugget. Theo suggests the the high profile signings of Lackey and Crawford were driven by a need to win now. He seems to suggest that these were overreaching moves. I have trouble with that idea. I think that we expect a team like the Sox to make occasional big free agents moves. It just so happens that they weren't very good at that kind of maneuver.
