Lots of talk about these two being available, and the Sox being in on them.... Without knowing anything about what we'd have to give up,
or what their contract status is, here is what I think - Garza - not sure why everyone loves him. He's had one good year - 2008, when he was 15 - 10 but had an ERA of 3.91. Career ERA is 3.85. He supposedly has good stuff, and he always seemed tough when he pitched for the Rays. Obviously, he can handle the AL East. And he is relatively young (28). But I hate the way he spits. Dempster - our rotation isn't particularly old, but Dempster is 35 and probably past his prime. He's pitching really well this year (1.53 ERA in 92 innings - guess he was hurt earlier this year). But career ERA of 4.3 scares me, as does WHIP of 1.43. And he's never pitched in the AL. And will his excellent Harry Caray impersonation even play in Boston? I guess I would prefer Garza, since he is younger and has pitched in this tough division, but would still hate to give up a top prospect for him.
