This was supposedly Bob McClure's claim to fame. A gruff old idiot who would stand up to the players. Instead we got a gruff old idiot who destroyed Bard and improved nothing.
Truth is, they probably are just looking forward to a nice photo op when they sign Farrell. I'm afraid that the Red Sox have gotten addicted to signings. They seem to crave the idea of standing in front of the flashing cameras while some grinning new guy holds a Red Sox jersey. I'm convinced this was the measure of success for the Dice-K, Crawford, and Valentine signings. It's not so exciting when you just renew Jason Bay, or hang on to Adrian Beltre.
