At the time the trade was made, I said I was skeptical about the prospects for
this newfound financial flexibility because all that did was place money in the
hands of people who proved the first time that they didn't know how to spend
it. I remain a skeptic.

They need to pay Ortiz whatever he wants, is my feeling. They can't replace the
offense he has put up. Yeah, he's a year older, and
injured, but they need him now more than ever, both from a baseball perspective
and a 'public relations' perspective. Ross, I would
like to have back but not at crazy money. I would do 2 years for him but not
three (unless it was a club option). But he wants to be here
so I think that will get done as well.

I don't see that Ortiz is worth the same money that he made the past two years.
He's 36, spent a big chunk of the season injured, and may be ready for a
slide.

If there was a deal it would need to be incentive-laden.

We do "The Trade" so we'll have financial flexibility. We're going to focus on
players who have proven they can play in Boston. Yet we're content to let David
Ortiz and Cody Ross go to free agency. I can't be completely critical because I
don't know what the players are asking, but I wish we'd locked them down for a
few more years. --
