So is anybody going to give the answer or will this remain an exercise for the
reader?

Yeah, total stupid geek question. But man I love 1980s Sox trivia.

I just checked. Oil Can signed as a free agent with Montreal after the 1989
season -- which is why I put the two together. I knew Can pitched for the Expos
after the Sox.

After giving my answer, I checked the real answer. It was one of those answers
that I never would have gotten on my own but made perfect sense after being
told.

Not that notable. :) (Great question though, I can't remember the terms under
which OCB left the sox...was he traded?)

Hint on Rivera question below:

This player came to Boston in a notable deal of his own in which the Sox traded
away a shortstop.

Blue Jays just announced former Red Sox SS Luis Rivera as third base coach. Got
me thinking about how he came to Boston. He was traded here in 1988 (along with
John Dopson) from Montreal.

Can anyone recall who the Sox traded away for him? Not a huge name, but notable.
