Skimmer a must?

I have a 18 gallon I am almost through setting up for fish only. I will use a
bio wheel & live sand for filtration. I do not entend to over load the tank
with critters & was hoping to get around buying a skimmer. I hate to buy a
cheap one that is not efficient. But I also hate forking out alot of $$$ for
something I can get by without for awhile.
      What are some opions on a skimmerless tank?
