Hey everybody. I just wanted to hear some opions from some other reefers.
I hope that this doesn't start any little tiffs. I am currently in the
middle of doing a overhaul of my setup. I have a 125g tank that runs to a
20g sump. I then have been running a 55g linked to the same sump to
increase water volume and act as a refugium. The 125 has a 1 inch layer of
oolitic sand and the 55 has had a 4-5 inch sand bed with a 1 inch plenum.
In the 55 i have tried to grow different types of macro algaes and run the
lights opposite of the 125. The problem is that over the past 6-8 months i
have only succeeded in growning hair algae and red slime algae in this tank
despite trying pc, vho, and no lights over the tank. I decided that I was
tired of having the sand bed choked out by thick layers of hair algae and i
think I talked my wife into using the 55 for another reef. The hair algae
has never made it to the 125. What I am planning on is to use a old 125g
tank or a 100g rubbermaid stock tank as the sump and getting rid of the 20g
and 55g.(hopefully both to be set back up as smaller reefs :-) ) I think
that i am going to leave the bottom bare and link in another rubbermaid
container to try to grow macros in and use as a small refugium. I have
recently built a 6 foot protein skimmer that ios working well but i am a
little concerned about a build up of nitrates. I know it is a little late
now to ask for advce now that I have started but I am hoping to head off any
problems that i may face in the near future. Any suggestions or advice
would be appreciated.

Thanks

 Ben
