Walter,
Yes, eggcrate is used for many things. One is to reflect light, or more to
diffuse light so that all of the light from a bulb does not get into the
tank. The reason I would not cut hours off of my light is
1. My corals are used to a certain on and off time for my lights. I
would rather not mess with that. They actually start to close about 15-20
minutes before the lights go off and I want to keep that going.
2. It is bad for a MH bulb to be turned on and off for different
periods of time. It is really best for the bulb to burn it in at a specific
amount of hours, (say you are planning to run the bulb 10 hours a day, it
should always be turned on and off for 10 hours if you can) and then run it
at that from there until you switch it out with a new light.

I am new in this, what is the eggcrate for, if it is to reflex some
light, I
have heard than you should simple cut off some hours of the halogen
light
and them slowly increase them, thats all I know.
